Creating a Multicultural Coexistence Community

The following is an introduction to the activities of the groups which make up the Takatori Community Center:

* Community Radio Station FM YY
    FM YY, from immediately after the Earthquake, has continuously provided foreign residents in the community with essential disaster-related information and information on everyday needs in many languages and broadcasts its message of "multi-cultural coexistence and humane community creation" in 8 languages.

* Leaf Green
    The group's activities involve work to support the independence and self-help of families with elderly people, handicapped people and children through home help, a transport-assistance service and childcare support activities. It also promotes communication between residents by organizing tea parties, and group-lunch gatherings for the elderly.

* Tour de Communication
     Using computers and video, the group works to support citizens' activities, community activities and minorities' independence activities. Its main work involves the creation of Internet homepages (Web sites), video and information material, computer classes and computer maintenance. The group's name "Tour de Communication" is intended to mean to tour or travel with communication as a tool.

* NGO Vietnam in Kobe
    This is an NGO group run by Vietnamese people themselves which is involved in various activities to help Vietnamese living in Japan to live in communion with local communities. It also provides information, helps the development of young people, supports the elderly as well as selling Vietnamese foodstuffs.

* Multi-Language Center FACIL
    The group translates information which the local foreign community needs, provides interpreters which are needed in everyday situations, and promotes a multi-language environment in the community, as well as translation and interpreting services for foreign residents, government offices, medical facilities and local businesses. It was involved in "volunteer" activities in a specialty field but is now developing into a non-profit community business.

* Asian Women's Empowerment Project
      The group is working to help create a society where women can be independent and support themselves with the family and do not have to depend on leaving the home (migrating or emigrating) to find work. The group helps to provide work for Asian women, sell the products they make and has formed a group which helps people learn about Asia. The group would like to help create a society where any woman can live with ease and dignity.

* World Kids Community
    The group works to help improve the environment in which children of foreign residents who have lived in Japan long periods are surrounded by. It provides home tutors, creates radio programs, supports (children's) soccer teams, organizes events, publishes an information newsletter and works to help young people develop self-confidence in their identity. The group also wishes to develop community activities to assist parents in the foreign community become independent and is looking for a reconsideration of the Japanese educational environment.
